India bauxite export market remains quiet

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 15 Oct 13 - The rainy season still influences India bauxite export this month. Many ports are closed due to the rainy season leading to quiet export market. According to China Customs, India only exported around 370,000t of bauxite to China in August, down greatly by around 60% MOM. In recent three months, India bauxite export seemed hard to recover.
An India bauxite trader revealed that they have 50,000t of India bauxite waiting for shipment since last month, but they cannot arrange shipment due to rainy season. “I think it may last until late this month,” said the source.
In addition, the source revealed that they offer USD50/t FOB India for bauxite Al 47-48% Si 4% and the freight cost is around USD15/t. It is hard to deal with low grade bauxite, noted the source. Even if the rainy season comes to end next month, the trader seemed worried about the price. Given the slowing down Indonesia bauxite market, Chinese bauxite buyers may refuse to accept the high India bauxite offer.
A Chinese bauxite consumer confirmed that they suspended India bauxite imported for several months. “We do not have intention to resume India bauxite import right now, because the bauxite quality is not stable,” said the source, noting that they once import around 100,000t of India bauxite each month.
The refinery now consumes around 1 million tons of bauxite each month and purchase bauxite from Indonesia, Australia and some other countries. They once imported India bauxite Al 42-43% Si 7-8%. According to China Customs, India bauxite price was around USD57-60/t CIF China in the past few months.
The source complained that the current Chinese alumina market is too weak and they hold many bauxite stocks on hand.
