Chinese bismuth ingot prices continue to increase

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 21 Feb 14 - Chinese bismuth ingot prices increased continuously recently. The mainstream prices are around RMB130,500-132,000/t (USD9.77-9.88/lb) currently, a RMB2,000/t (USD0.15/lb) increase to prices of RMB128,500-130,000/t (USD9.62-9.73/lb) at the end of last week.
A trader in South China, with a regular trading volume of around 30tpm for bismuth ingot, reported that downstream users were active in making purchase recently and they sold some bismuth ingot at RMB132,000-132,500/t (USD9.88-9.92/lb) late this week, which increased further against the RMB129,000-130,000/t (USD9.66-9.73/lb) late last week. According to the source, they purchased some bismuth ingot at RMB130,000/t (USD9.73/lb) from domestic plants early this week, and the offers increase to around RMB131,000/t (USD9.81/lb) or higher now.
The source added that most bismuth ingot plants in China do not make offers now, expecting the prices to increase further, and it is hard for them to purchase bismuth ingot in large quantities on the spot market.
A bismuth oxide producer in China, with a regular consumption of around 70tpm for bismuth ingot, told Asian Metal that they purchased 30t of bismuth ingot at RMB129,000-130,000/t (USD9.66-9.73/lb) early this week, up by around RMB2,000/t (USD0.15/lb) further against that of last week, and the offers from bismuth ingot plants are around RMB131,000-132,000/t (USD9.81-9.88/lb) now.
The source noted that the demand for bismuth oxide is weak. They are working on orders for bismuth oxide signed at RMB128,000/t (USD9.58/lb) in early February now and sealed a deal at RMB130,000/t (USD9.73/lb) early this week. “The price rise of bismuth ingot is mainly driven up by the stockpile in some Asian exchanges. The downstream demand for bismuth oxide is not strong and the profit margin is very limited for us under the current bismuth ingot price,” said the source.
