The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) recently provided a series of report on global aluminum decarbonization process and also announced the 2050 greenhouse emission reduction goal for the global aluminum industry before the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) was held in Glasgow, Scotland.
According to the report, by 2050, the global aluminum industry must cut carbon dioxide emissions by 77% compared with 2018, with significant reduction to be seen from alumina and primary aluminum industries. The report forecasts that carbon emission from aluminum smelting should be slashed by nearly 90% from 823 million tons to 90 million tons . In 2018, power-related carbon emission in the process of aluminum smelting recorded 670 million tons, which, based on reduction plans, shall be cut to 8 million by 2050 . The reports also said that aluminum industry shall halve greenhouse gas emission to 90 million tons by 2050 from 171 million tons in 2018.
