1. Market Highlights
The domestic flat steel market performance failed to keep improving during the month, and prices changed narrowly. Prices of raw materials increased further, together with the low stocks, encouraging steel mills and traders to move up prices. Leading producers such as Baosteel, HBIS and Ansteel lifted ex-works prices of flat steel by RMB100-200/t (USD14-28/t) for January production . However, the demand from downstream industries shrank gradually dragged by the cold weather . Besides, believing prices unlikely to go up obviously, end users strictly purchased from hand to mouth, both leading to the slow market . In the meantime, the export market showed signs of weakening as the price advantage from China faded away gradually after the continuous price increases since late October.
In the meantime, the international flat steel market performed inactively during the month, and prices ran on different trends. Participants adopted wait-and-see attitudes towards the market prospect, and the demand kept soft.
