Zijin Mining gets approval to expand production at Julong Copper

Tibet Julong Copper Co., Ltd., a holding subsidiary of Zijin Mining, has received authority approval to build the phase two expansion project at Julong Copper Mine, which will add copper production capacity of 200,000tpd to bring the total production scale to 350,000tpd. With an investment estimated at RMB17.5 billion (USD2.43 billion), the phase two will use open-pit mining method and is expected to go into operation by late 2025, and when fully operational, the phase one and two would have a combined mining and dressing throughput of more than 100 million tonnes per annum of ore, with annual production of mined copper to reach 300,000-350,000 tonnes, making Julong Copper Mine the biggest copper mine in China and the largest copper mine put into operation in the world this century.
At the cutoff grade of 0.2% Cu, Julong Copper Mine contains 26.11 million tonnes of copper, 1.78 million tonnes of molybdenum and 15,000 tonnes of silver. Preliminary study indicated that Julong Copper Mine has mineable reserves of 20.11 million tonnes of copper at 0.32% Cu, 1.31 million tonnes of associated molybdenum and 13,100 tonnes of silver. In 2023, Julong Copper Mine became one of the top two copper mines in China with mined copper production of 154,000 tonnes.
Julong Copper Mine is also planning a third phase of capacity expansion, which is expected to take the total annual mining and dressing throughput to nearly 200 million tonnes, making Julong Copper the biggest copper mine in the world.
