China passes revised mineral resources law

On November 8, Chinese lawmakers passed the revised Mineral Resources Law which will take effect on July 1, 2025.
This represents the first major revision of the Mineral Resources Law since 1996 and 2009. The revised law demands efforts to promote the sustainable development and utilization of mineral resources, strengthen the protection of mineral resources and the ecological environment, safeguard the rights and interests of the state owners of mineral resources and the legitimate rights and interests of the owners of mining rights, advance the high-quality development of mining sector, and ensure the security of national mineral resources . The law stipulates that China will comprehensively promote the competitive transfer of mining rights.
