Fugu's magnesium firms discuss cooperation with titanium sponge producers

On November 22, representatives from major Chinese magnesium and titanium sponge companies gathered in Fugu, Shaanxi to discuss ways to enhance coordinated development and improve industry norms and standards.
China's titanium sponge production hit a historic high of 217,000 tonnes in 2023, when approximately 240,000 tonnes magnesium was consumed to produce titanium sponge. Most Chinese titanium sponge producers adopt full-process method, with just a few using semi-process method. According to statistics, Chinese titanium sponge plants purchased less than 50,000 tonnes of magnesium in 2023, which accounted for just 6% of the country's total annual production of the metal. According to statistics by China Non-ferrous Metals Industry Association Titanium Zirconium & Hafnium Branch, China's production capacity of titanium sponge would rise to nearly 500,000tpa from the current 300,000tpa in the next three to five years amid increasing demand for titanium alloy.
