GEM plans to enter into a MoU with South Korean cathode material companies ECOPRO and ECOPRO BM, to integrate resource, capital and technology to push forward with their comprehensive cathode materials project in Indonesia, which will consist of the smelting of nickel ore, the production of precursor and cathode materials.
Under the agreement, GEM will be in charge of the smelting of nickel ore and production of precursor, and ECOPRO will build the cathode material plants, for a total production capacity of 200,000tpa. The cathode material is produced through one-time sintering process at the Indonesia plant, and then through a second sintering process at ECOPRO BM's existing production bases in South Korea, Europe and North America, in order to reduce production cost.
The two sides agreed to implement the project in three phases. The first and second phases will each build a 50,000tpa cathode material plant . If first two phases go well, they plan to push ahead with construction of the remaining production capacity of 100,000tpa.
