The world's first magnesium alloy wheel using semi-solid molding (SSM) technique has been produced in Chongqing, China.
The magnesium alloy wheel, formed by Haitian's 3600T semi-solid magnesium injection moulding machine, was jointly developed by Chongqing University, Chongqing Dicastal Jieli Wheel Manufacturing Co., Ltd . , Ningbo Free Trade Zone Haitian Zhisheng Die Casting Equipment Co . , Ltd . , Chongqing Boao Magnesium Aluminium Manufacturing Co . , Ltd . , Chongqing Borun Mold Co . , Ltd . , and Mingyue Lake Laboratory in Chongqing . This marks another innovative product developed by Chongqing University since it debuted the world's biggest magnesium alloy die-casting automotive rare plate in 2023.
Compared with the mainstream solid state molding for magnesium alloy wheel, the semi-solid injection molding technique uses four types of magnesium alloy to produce a 16-inch wheel for regular passenger car, with a net weight of 7kg, which is around 30% lighter than the traditional aluminum alloy wheel.
Chongqing University expects to strengthen cooperation with upstream and downstream partners and end-users to promote the design and development of semi-solid molding products to benefit from weight reduction and carbon reduction.
