Liaoning Huaxiang to launch zirconium-hafnium separation project

Liaoning Huaxiang New Materials Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sanxiang Advanced Materials Co., Ltd., plans to invest up to RMB300 million (USD41.81 million) in a zirconium-hafnium separation project with an annual capacity of 20,000 tonnes. Located within its existing plant, the project will build on the current zirconium oxychloride production line to produce nuclear-grade zirconium oxychloride and hafnium oxychloride. Construction, including a new extraction facility and supporting infrastructure, is expected to take around 15 months.
The project will be developed in phases. Once completed, it will add annual production capacity of over 250 tonnes of hafnium oxychloride, 11,740 tonnes of ultra-high-purity zirconium oxychloride, and 8,000 tonnes of nuclear-grade zirconium oxychloride. It is expected to help ease raw material shortages in nuclear energy, semiconductor precursors, and high-temperature alloy sectors.
