The automobile industry generally uses magnesium alloy as the material for body instead of iron and steel, according to the research result from Fraunhofer Institute.
On the Hanoverian Industry Exposition of Innovative Technology from April 4 to April 8, these results could be exhibited in case, which was the reflection of the research result of automobile experts from Frauhofer Automobile Association.
At present, auto manufacturers have to meet the demand from consumers and experts pay main attention to produce car parts with lower cost and lighter weight. They hope that their discoveries can meet the demand better.
The invention of light magnesium alloy door lays the stone for the future development of this technology. The door weights around 10 . 7kg with the iron and steel as the raw material while that of with magnesium ally only weights 4 . 7kg.
S?ren Scheffler, a principal of magnesium car door researcher, also explained why they chose the magnesium as the material for doors. The magnesium is rich in the world and the alloy can be used to draw mould with relatively no disparity with the iron and steel doors in terms of strength . This team has studied out the detailed mould for magnesium alloy, a precedent for the later production of light automobile body.
On this exposition, the researchers exhibited the new 40 studies covering the whole production chain, including automobile body, dynamical system, internal structure, automotive mount and electromobility.
Besides magnesium alloy doors, the researchers are devoting themselves to other researches about auto production. The bodywork can be optimized by the new joining technology . A research team from Bremen in Germany has discovered a glue processing method which can speed up the production . It takes several hours for the common glue to firm and the front car light must be fixed in a certain place . At present, the researchers are adopting the new glue which can realize heat embrittlement in one minute with microwave and improve the continuous progress of assembly program.
The Fraunhofer Automobile Association includes 17 research institutes and provides support for the overall research development with competitiveness to German auto industry. Different teams are committing themselves to comprehensive research projects in different working sites to improve the application of innovative technology into the production flow.
